In Castletownbere, the Festival of the Sea, held over the August Bank Holiday weekend and the week that follows is the most eagerly anticipated event of the summer, with thousands of visitors, families and friends flocking to this small fishing town on the Beara Peninsula.
Organised by the Castletownbere Development Association (CDA), the Festival of the Sea is a family-oriented fun-filled week and the best example of the community coming together to showcase what Castletownbere has to offer. The Festival has been going from strength to strength over the last number of years and this year we are hoping will be the biggest yet. With that in mind, in 2017 we have introduced a new Festival logo, dedicated social media accounts and introduced even more new & exciting events than ever before.
The Highlights of the 2019 Festival of the Sea are as follows;
Friday 2nd: Opening Night,
Saturday 3rd: Fish Festival Day,
Sunday 4th: Family Fun Day,
Monday 5th: Castletownbere Annual Regatta Day & Water Events,
Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th: Various Events on each day with the Highlights being; Monthly Bingo Night, the Car Treasure Hunt, 7 A-Side Soccer Final & Poker Tournament,
Saturday 10th: The Closing of the Festival.
This will be the sixth year of our Fish Festival Day, held on Saturday 3rd and it is hoped that a focus on fish and traditional fishing skills will bring a strong sense of community, as fishing is the industry at the heart of Castletownbere. We will once again hold the fish filleting competition, followed by a Seafood BBQ for all to sample our fabulous local fresh fish.
This year, we are very excited to confirm the return of "The Skipper - Fisherman of the Year” perpetual trophy for the best overall performance in our fishing skills competitions.
Live music in The Square of Castletownbere brings a lively atmosphere to the festival and is always something to look forward to, so we are delighted to have some fantastic performers & bands lined up again for this year, on the Saturday, Sunday & Monday nights.
